Thanks to the Prince of Campofiorito, Don Stefano of the “Casa Reggio”, the foundation of Acitrezza took place. He was charged from Don Francesco Fernandez de Cueva, Duca di Alburquerque and Vicerè of Sicily to organize the aids and provide aid to the city of Catania threatened from the Etna eruption of the 1669. During his permanence in the area he fell in love with the wonderful district, which was located from the mythical rocks of the cyclopses to the forest of Aci.
On January of the 1672 he bought down the feud of R. Corte, from Marquis Don Nicolò Diana di Cefalà, for 36500 scudi, the cities of Aci SS. Antonio and Filippo.  He understood the advantages that could get from the development of a place, with a way to the sea, taking the territories in front of the rocks of the Cyclopses right where rises today the beach of Acitrezza. The Prince made a lot of things in this charming place to create, a proper village. He had to clean up the beach, to built a port that could use for the boats and a small port right in front of the rocks of the “Ciclopi”: the Lachea Island, the “Longa”, the large Faraglione, the one of the middle, the small Faraglione and, between the last two, the rocks “du Zu Ianu”, called “Zu Ianu di terra” and “Zu Ianu di fora”, so called, based on the place he fished, Sebastiano Greco, at the beginning of the last century, with his small boat.
Later, the Prince, thinking to transform the small port in a better one, he tried to close a section of sea between the Lachea Island and the “Longa”. Stones were used, taken from the same island, and placed on layers. But that did not work at all as a sea storm, during the winter destroyed it.
Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the newborn village were not much yet and the Prince, in order to populate it, decided to give the political asylum to people who had problems with the justice, that is to say people wanted by the Spanish police could find refuge under his protection.
The population developed not only with the fishing activity but also with the sea traffic of small sailing boats along the coasts for the commerce of objects and products.
The prince was truly in love with Trezza. In fact, he held for long time among the others the title of “Gentleman of Acitrezza”.

ORIGIN OF THE NAME OF ACITREZZA.
There are many hypothesis about the origin of the name: 1)“Tri pizzi”, the three tops of the three Faraglioni. 2)“acis lateritiae”, the factory of bricks of Aci. 3)“Latruzza”, she was a sly woman, owner of the posada existing in Acitrezza even before the foundation, who gave hospitality to the travellers and, while they were asleep, she stole them. 4)“Trizera di Aci”, a shortcut with a natural landscape, which allowed to reach Acireale in a shorter time frame, from all the near places. 5) “La Trezza”, it comes from the webbing of the fishing nets made by the fishermen of the place.6)“La treccia”, the positioning of the cyclopics rocks that seems to create a shape that looks like a braid.
